The Joe Walsh Tours programme concentrates on the beautiful state of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo, home to the Orang-utan and one of only two natural habitats for this beautiful endangered species.

This award-winning eco-lodge is a simple solar-powered hideaway, situated at the edge of the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, which contains the highest concentration of orang-utans and proboscis monkeys in Malaysia. Set in a remote spot amidst the tropical rainforest, you are transferred by boat from Sandakan to Sukau up the Kinabatangan River to the lodge. Offering an authentic environmental experience in secluded surroundings, it has accommodation for only 40 visitors and provides a unique experience in local hospitality, interpretation and conservation.
Facilities: 2 restaurants, bar, library, gift shop, open lounge area with ceiling fan, covered veranda and enclosed hanging garden, jetty complete with fishing and sunset decks, 4 bird and wildlife viewing decks, 1,500 ft long covered boardwalk complete with 2 elephant "passes" to accommodate their regular migration through the back of the lodge.

Day 1
Fly from Dublin/Cork/Shannon to Kuala Lumpur via London with Malaysia Airlines
Day 2 4
Arrive in Kuala Lumpur and transfer to The Pacific Regency Hotel - where you will stay for 2 nights. You will spend 2 days shopping and exploring the many sites and attractions of this exciting city. (RO)
Day 4 9
Transfer to Kuala Lumpur airport for connecting flight to Kota Kinabalu (KK) with Malaysia Airlines. Arrive in KK and transfer to the 5 star Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort. Spend 5 nights in this luxurious haven exploring the nature reserve surrounding this hotel, playing golf, visiting the nearby islands or simply relaxing on the beautiful beach. (RO)
Day 9
Early morning transfer to Kota Kinabalu airport for short flight to Sandakan.
On arrival in Sandakan, continue on a short tour of the town, including a tea break in one of the houses on the water village and the Australian War Memorial.
Continue to Sandakan boat jetty and take a 2 hour boatride to The Sukau Rainforest Lodge where you can settle in and freshen up.
After lunch you will be brought on a two hour boat ride in search of the proboscis monkey and other wildlife along the Kinabatangan River. Return for solar heated hot showers, candle light dinner and slide show conducted by the naturalist guide.
Overnight Sukau Rainforest Lodge. (L,D)The award winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge offers simple accommodation in the heart of the jungle. All rooms are ensuite and include twin beds, ceiling fan and mosquito nets.
Day 10
Wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills and take an early morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to view more birds and wildlife.
Proceed to Kelenanap oxbow lake for a short jungle walk.
Return to Riverlodge for breakfast.
Afternoon free for another cruise or some walking.
After dinner take an optional night safari cruise to view the nocturnal animals, crocodiles and birds. (B,D)
Day 11 13
After breakfast transfer by boat to Sukau Village for a short tour and return to Sandakan by boat.
On arrival in Sandakan you will have lunch and then transfer to Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Trek 10 minutes into the rainforest to see the feeding of the orang-utans. Transfer to the airport for your return
flight to KK. (B,L)
On arrival in KK, transfer to the Magellan Wing at The Sutera Harbour Resort where you will stay for 3 nights.The Sutera Harbour resort is ideally located for exploring KK and taking a trip to Kinabulu Park and Poring Springs. (RO)
