The capital, St. John's, is very picturesque with brightly coloured buildings, colonial architecture and quaint shops. There are several duty free shopping complexes, with a good selection of cosmetics, alcohol and cigarettes at discounted prices. The weekend public market is lively and atmospheric and a lovely place to browse around in the sunshine.
For those who enjoy sightseeing, Nelson's Dockyard in the village of English Harbour is worth a visit, as well as Betty's Hope, an 18th century restored sugar mill near Pares Village. Meet the locals and party hearty on Sunday in Shirley Heights, featuring steel and reggae bands, open-air barbeque dining, rum cocktails and a spectacular sunset!
