The Top End - Darwin & Kakadu

Darwin

Darwin, the ‘capital’ of northern Australia, enjoys a relaxed, tropical lifestyle and is an ideal base from which to explore Australia’s top end. It sits on one of Australia’s most picturesque harbours, opening out onto the sparkling waters of the Arafura Sea. Interestingly, is closer to Bali than it is to Sydney and closer to Singapore than it is Melbourne!

Experience the diversity of Darwin’s sophisticated local culinary scene and enjoy a fusion of Asian, European and modern Australian food, complemented by a local beer, crisp Australian wine or rich coffee. Linger in Mitchell Street, the hip centre of Darwin’s entertainment scene and lined with bars, restaurants, cafes, pubs and boutiques. Famous for its local markets, Darwin’s local art and craft scene will ensure you have top-class souvenirs to bring home.

Not far from Darwin you will find the renowned attractions of Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks, famed for their spectacular natural scenery and vast array of wildlife. We have a variety of day trips and excursions available to introduce you to the splendours of these protected parks, or why not spend a few days on a longer tour to truly get an appreciation of their unique and diverse
natural beauty.

Kakadu is of the most beautiful and unspoilt places in Australia and is World Heritage listed not only for its natural significance, but also its cultural importance. More than two billion years old and covering 20,000 sq. kms, it is a splendid collection of wetlands, gorges, waterfalls, floodplains and rainforest.

Take the time to explore with a nature guide to get a full appreciation of these areas and track down some mighty crocodiles, cassowaries, kangaroos, wombats and other native creatures in their natural habitat. Discover the ancient Aboriginal rock art, thousands of years old and telling stories that have been handed down through the generations.

Litchfield National Park is famous for its spring-fed waterfalls, awesome termite mounds, beautiful swimming holes and top-class native wildlife spotting. Discover the beauty of Tolmer Falls, Wangi Falls and Florence Falls and, for a real treat, take the time to enjoy a dip in their refreshing waters. Enjoy a bushwalk and make sure to witness the awesome spectacle of the Tabletop Range - a spectacular sandstone plateau from which four waterfalls tumble into the lowlands.

Katherine Gorge is another must-see sight of the Top End. This magnificent 180,000-hectare national park features 13 gorges and also offers a fascinating glimpse of Aboriginal culture. A string of spectacular canyons, interwoven by the Katherine River it is 23 million years old and is simply stunning. Enjoy a cruise through Katherine Gorge and see for yourself why it is one of the main attractions of this region.
