The Franz Josef Glacier was named in 1863, after the Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is approx. 7000 yrs old & is the remains of a much older & larger glacier which originally led right to the sea. It stretches out 12 kms from its 3 feeder glaciers in the snow fields of the Southern Alps. The terminal face is only 5 kms from the village & 19 kms from the sea.

The trip involves a scenic flight over the Franz Josef icefalls together with a two hour guided hike amongst spectacular ice formations.
