North Island

Map

The North Island is perhaps best known for the unique volcanic plateau at its centre and the beachside beauty of the Coromandal and Northland regions.
Auckland, the famous ‘City of Sails’ enjoys a sophisticated and relaxed atmosphere with a distinct nautical flavour, and is a wonderful place to spend a few days soaking up the Kiwi culture. There is a wealth of engaging distractions in the North Island - from thermal wonders to aquatic delights.

Situated on a narrow peninsula between two beautiful harbours, Auckland is the main gateway to New Zealand and provides a perfect base for exploring the Northland and Coromandel regions. Its social scene centres around the harbour area - reflecting the city’s devotion to all things marine. In fact Auckland has more boats per capita than any other city in the world.

Food is a serious part of life in Auckland, with a huge number of restaurants, cafes and food halls for you to try out. Enjoy the delicious fusion of ethnic fare influenced by its multi-cultural local population. Scores of boutiques and souvenir shops pack the streets, yet, in less than an hour, you can find yourself relaxing on a beach, lounging on an island, exploring a forest or discovering one of the numerous wineries.

The thermal belt in the middle of the North Island contains the active volcanoes Ruapehu, Ngaruhoe and Tongariro and magnificent geysers, boiling mud pools, hot springs and steam vents. Spend a few days in Tongariro National Park and Rotorua to truly appreciate the bubbling volcanic wonders.

The historic Bay of Islands in the Northland region is famous for its scenic islands, deserted strands and secluded coves, while the Coromandel peninsula is renowned for its golden beaches with stunning coastal scenery and its rugged woodland interior.

Wellington, the country's capital, offers a vibrant & dynamic atmosphere where creativity and innovation is evident on every corner.
